Wye Historical Society AGM and meeting

Wed, 4 Mar 2020 19:30

Wye Historical Society AGM

19.30 (doors open at 19.00)

Peter Ewart: 'Smuggling in Kent'

The talk will cover the heyday of smuggling in Kent during the 18th and early 19th centuries and how smuggling came about. Descriptive accounts of the methods adopted by these 'Honest Thieves', the crimes committed by these large and violent gangs and how they covered them up, gives the lie to any romantic notions of smugglers as harmless, jolly rascals.

Annual subscription fees are payable from 1 October: £10.00 per person. This includes the annual journal Wye Local History. Meetings are held in the Lady Joanna Thornhill School at 19.30 on the first Wednesday of the month from October to April.

Members can also opt to receive the Journal of Kent History, published in March and September at a charge of £5, or £7 for those outside Wye. New members and visitors are welcome to join. Non-members may attend meetings at £2.00 per lecture. To join, simply turn up to a meeting or email enquiries@wyehistoricalsociety.org.uk for more details.

NALC Lobby Day

Lobby Day is an integral part of NALC's advocacy programme aimed at promoting parish and town councils in Parliament.

Lobby Day involves representatives of county associations of local councils and NALC meeting with Members of Parliament. This is an opportunity to tell MPS about the great things local councils are doing and getting them to support the changes that NALC is calling for on behalf of all parish and town councils councils. The previous Lobby Day engaged with over 100 MPs, including ministers, shadow ministers and deputy speaker of the House of Commons. This year NALC has also invited a series of guest speakers on health and well-being, improvement and development, and tips on how to successfully engage with parliament

Ashford 2030: Priorities for the future

Tue, 10 Mar 2020 10:00

Ashford 2030: Priorities for the future

10.00 - 12.30 (Timing TBC)

Ashford Borough Council is working to shape an ambitious new vision for the borough. Ahead of the review of the Corporate Plan (2020-2025) and the Local Plan to 2030, the council has embarked on a major Futures Study, working in partnership with Work Advance Ltd and Experian PLC. We are exploring 'what do we want to achieve over the next decade' 'what steps do we need to take now to ensure a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future for Ashford, Tenterden and the surrounding villages and rural areas'.

A draft vision is being complied following a workshop in early February, where local councils were represented by the Chair and Vice Chair of Ashford KALC. The next stage is to test and refine the draft vision. This will be facilitated through a focused workshop. We have arranged 3 dates to undertake this exercise and would like to extend an invitation to local councils to attend one of these.

Ashford 2030: Priorities for the future POSTPONED

Tue, 17 Mar 2020 14:00

Ashford 2030: Priorities for the future POSTPONED

Shape the vision for the future of Ashford Borough.

Over the past decade, the Ashford Borough has witnessed considerable economic success and growth. But what do we want to achieve over the next decade? And what steps do we need to take now to ensure a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future for Ashford, Tenterden and the surrounding villages and rural areas?

Ahead of the review of the Corporate Plan (2020-2025) and the Local Plan to 2030, Ashford Borough Council is embarking on a major Futures Study, working in partnership with Work Advance Ltd and Experian PLC.

Following a large-scale process of evidence gathering and engagement, including a major visioning event in February 2020 attended by nearly 100 stakeholders from across the Borough, the research has developed an ambitious new vision for Ashford, Tenterden and the surrounding villages and rural areas. Through this 2.5 hour session we will discuss, debate and refine this vision; and explore the strategic priorities and actions necessary to make it a reality.

Voluntary donation to Kent Refugee Action Network.

Established in 2003, this charity supports young refugees and asylum seekers in Kent, and provides education programmes to help them integrate into the community.

'Migrants reaching Kent can apply for asylum as refugees and - if accepted - are given leave to stay in the UK for four years. Children under 18 who arrive unaccompanied, will be processed by police in Kent. They then spend six to eight weeks in a reception centre where they will receive health checks and be allocated a social worker. One of the largest centres is in Ashford. Refugee status is granted in accordance to the Geneva Convention and around 28 per cent of applicants were granted refuge in 2017.' Kent Live report
