In Chaucer's Footsteps - Pilgrimage to Canterbury

Mon, 27 May 2019 10:00

28th London to Canterbury Pilgrimage

Walk in Chaucer's footsteps from St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square to Canterbury. Much of the 74 mile route follows ancient paths along the North Downs. The pilgrimage will take place from Friday, 24th May to Monday 27th May.

Pilgrims will pause for refreshments at All Saints, Boughton Aluph between about 10.00 and 12.00

If the weather is inclement there is usually a welcoming fire burning in the fireplace in the south porch. This is an unusual feature to find in a church, but it has served many previous generations of pilgrims on their way to the shrine of St Thomas Becket

The pilgrimage raises funds for The Connection, based at St Martin in the Fields since 1948. The charity helps homeless people by providing specialist services – including a day and night centre, outreach for rough sleepers, skills training and career advice, activity programmes and specialist support for complex needs – to over 200 people in central London every day.

Last year the pilgrimage raised over £49K for the work of The Connection.

Volunteers needed 27th May to make sandwiches and other savoury food for the pilgrims. Please contact Sue Powell

Big Lunch 2019

Sat, 1 Jun 2019

This year's Big Lunch will take place on Saturday 1st June and Sunday 2nd June 2019.

The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually on the first Sunday in June in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. Since starting in 2009, thousands of Big Lunches have taken place in all types of communities. In 2014, 4.83 million people took to their streets, gardens and community spaces for the sixth annual Big Lunch.

It's never too late to organise your own get-together with your neighbours. Whether it's a couple of homes getting together for a picnic or a full blown street party, anyone anywhere can organise a Big Lunch at any time of year. The key ingredients are people and food! To help get started why not check out our 5 easy steps for planning a Big Lunch, and FAQ.

Love Your Burial Ground Week

Sat, 8 Jun 2019

Love Your Burial Ground Week

(formerly Cherishing Churchyards Week)

9th - 16th June 2019

Celebrate churchyards and burial grounds and to raise awareness of the treasures they contain.

Churchyards are special places:

  • They often contain a rich diversity of plant and animal life.
  • They are important places for archaeology and history.
  • They often have distinctive and veteran trees.
  • The stonework and boundary walls provide a home for a mosaic of mosses, ferns and lichens.
  • They provide a tranquil place for quiet reflection.
  • They are a resource for inspiration and community learning.

Churchyards are often within walking distance of local communities and can provide a focus for community involvement.

WasteAid

'Did you know that up to 70% of the plastic in the oceans comes from places with no waste management?

1 in 3 people globally do not have a rubbish collection and have to burn or dump their waste. Poorly managed waste contributes to the spread of disease, adds to the climate crisis and pollutes the oceans.

WasteAid is a small charity that shares waste management and recycling skills in the world's poorest places.

Our partners make products from waste, fight poverty, prevent climate change emissions and stop plastic pollution.' WasteAid

NALC Expo 2019

Fri, 21 Jun 2019 09:00

NALC and LGRC are staging a major one-day EXPO for the local council sector. This will be one of the largest single gatherings of local councils in 2019. We aim to provide an opportunity for councillors and others interested in local councils to see the complete range of products and services that a council might need, all in one place. If you will be looking for a supplier of anything from tractors to IT equipment, or signage to stationery, in the next year or two this is the ideal place to start. If you need to review your banking or insurance or create a new website, we expect all the major players to be here.
