The Five Church Walk

The Five Church Walk

Mon, 6 May 2019 10:00

The Five Church Walk

In aid of the five churches on the route, Kent Air Ambulance and the Pilgrims Hospices

You can start the walk at any time from 10am onwards, from either Chilham, Godmersham, Boughton Aluph, Challock or Molash churches.

The well-marked paths link these churches in a clockwise circular 16 mile route following footpaths, bridleways, country lanes and private paths made available by special permission of the land-owners.

The route is in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and it passes through some of the most scenic countryside in East Kent for all to enjoy, and with millions of bluebells in flower and the cuckoo calling you can be sure of a lovely day. You can choose to complete the whole circuit or any part of it, and start and finish at any of the five churches.

This will be the thirty third annual sponsored walk, held in aid of the five participating churches, the Kent Air Ambulance and/or the Pilgrims Hospices. The funds raised are distributed according to your wishes. Those without sponsors are also more than welcome and are asked to make a minimum donation of £5 each. Each church also offers delicious home-made refreshments (and loos) while you take a welcome break.

In Chaucer's Footsteps - Pilgrimage to Canterbury

Mon, 27 May 2019 10:00

28th London to Canterbury Pilgrimage

Walk in Chaucer's footsteps from St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square to Canterbury. Much of the 74 mile route follows ancient paths along the North Downs. The pilgrimage will take place from Friday, 24th May to Monday 27th May.

Pilgrims will pause for refreshments at All Saints, Boughton Aluph between about 10.00 and 12.00

If the weather is inclement there is usually a welcoming fire burning in the fireplace in the south porch. This is an unusual feature to find in a church, but it has served many previous generations of pilgrims on their way to the shrine of St Thomas Becket

The pilgrimage raises funds for The Connection, based at St Martin in the Fields since 1948. The charity helps homeless people by providing specialist services – including a day and night centre, outreach for rough sleepers, skills training and career advice, activity programmes and specialist support for complex needs – to over 200 people in central London every day.

Last year the pilgrimage raised over £49K for the work of The Connection.

Volunteers needed 27th May to make sandwiches and other savoury food for the pilgrims. Please contact Sue Powell

Big Lunch 2019

Sat, 1 Jun 2019

This year's Big Lunch will take place on Saturday 1st June and Sunday 2nd June 2019.

The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually on the first Sunday in June in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. Since starting in 2009, thousands of Big Lunches have taken place in all types of communities. In 2014, 4.83 million people took to their streets, gardens and community spaces for the sixth annual Big Lunch.

It's never too late to organise your own get-together with your neighbours. Whether it's a couple of homes getting together for a picnic or a full blown street party, anyone anywhere can organise a Big Lunch at any time of year. The key ingredients are people and food! To help get started why not check out our 5 easy steps for planning a Big Lunch, and FAQ.
