'The Glasgow Boys'

Speaker: Lachlan Gouldie

'Some of the most popular paintings in the collection are by a group of radical young painters who came to be known as 'The Glasgow Boys'. They represent the beginnings of modernism in Scottish painting. In the early 1880s, united by their disillusionment with academic painting, they painted contemporary rural subjects, and often worked out of doors sketching and painting directly in front of their subject.' Woodland Tales with Granddad

Woodland Tales with Granddad

Sat, 16 Nov 2019 18:30

Family Theatre returns to Godmersham with Pickled Image and "Woodland Tales with Granddad"

Something is happening in the woods, voices can be heard and a strange metallic smell fills the air. Machines are gathering at its edge and a mysterious call is heard across the valley. Laura, the ladybird, Jeffrey, the spider, Brett, the woodlouse, and Willoughby, the woodpecker, are worried. Velda, the vixen, knows there is only one person who can help them – Grandad but is there enough time? Can they save the wood? And will the mystery stranger help.

This promises to be an incredible show with an important environmental message to share.

Rod LeGear has been an active member of the Kent Archaeological Society since 1963 and has specialised in mining archaeology and underground surveying and recording. National Tree Week

Sat, 23 Nov 2019

National Tree Week is the UK's largest annual tree celebration. Events across the country between 23rd November and 1st December mark the start of the winter tree planting season and inspire communities across the UK to come together and plant thousands of trees. The annual campaign started in 1975 and started as a response to the Dutch Elm Disease crisis of the 1960s, which wiped out more than 20 million of our most significant landscape trees.

This National Tree Week, people are planting trees around the country. They are laying down roots for a more tree-filled future to tackle climate change and protect our precious wildlife habitats.

Stir-up Sunday

Sun, 24 Nov 2019

Traditionally, the last Sunday before Advent is stir-up Sunday, when families get together to mix their Christmas pudding with everyone taking turns to make a wish. The term comes from the opening words of the collect for the day found in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer (1549):

Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

This prayer is read on the last Sunday before Advent and supposedly, cooks, wives and their servants would go to church, hear the words 'Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord...', and be reminded that it was about time to start stirring up the puddings for Christmas.
