Field Identification Skills Certificate Assessment
Thu, 5 Sep 2019 10:45
The Field Identification Skills Certificate or FISC is becoming the standard for assessing botanical survey skills - there is currently no equivalent qualification. All candidates receive a certificate from the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland stating their botanical skill level. Useful advice is also given on how to progress to the next level.
10.45 - 16.15
A FISC starts with a morning lab session, where candidates identify plant species from all over the British Isles. In the afternoon, candidates visit a secret location and spend around an hour and a half recording every plant they see.
We are working in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University.
The cost for FISC events in 2019 is £75 nationally, which includes transport to the secret location

Asian Hornet Week 2018
Mon, 9 Sep 2019
The British Beekeeping Association's Asian Hornet Week takes place between the 9th to the 15th September 2019.
If Asian Hornets become established in the UK they will have a devastating effects on honey bees and all other beneficial pollinators. September is the time of year when Asian hornets start hawking honeybees at hive entrances. The early autumn is the last chance we will have to prevent the emergence of new Asian hornet queens.
'It is vital that in the spring, when Asian hornet foundresses are on the wing and sighted by someone, they are not allowed to escape. Please familiarise yourselves with what the Asian hornet looks like by searching it's Latin name: Vespa velutina in search engines and viewing images of it. If you spot one, please make every effort to try and capture/ kill it to prevent it from flying off.' National Bee Unit

Weald of Kent Ploughing Match Association
Sat, 14 Sep 2019 09:30
Annual Weald of Kent Ploughing Match
"The Weald of Kent Ploughing Match Association (WKPMA) came in to being in 1947 following the amalgamation of the Marden Agricultural Society and the Sandhurst Ploughing Match Association. The physical size of the match has grown and it has undoubtedly become more important to the local farming and agricultural community. Ploughing remains the main focus of the event. It is a skill which has also evolved, as ploughing by tractors with no cabs or sophisticated hydraulics has given way to a mixed entry of modern, vintage, steam and horse ploughs."
The Annual WKPMA ploughing Match is one of the premier agricultural events on the Kent Calendar. It is a charitable event with proceeds going to a worthy cause.

Eighth Annual Nightingale Lecture
Tue, 24 Sep 2019 19:00
Retribution, performing passivity and protest anew: social and political relations in Kent after the Swing Riots
Professor Carl Griffin (Professor of Historical Geography, University of Sussex)
19.00 (wine reception 18.30) Free open lecture voluntary retiring collection. All welcome.
In studies of rural social conflict two themes have dominated: on the one hand, studies of the major outbreaks of rural protest, and, on the other, analyses of everyday conflict and social relations. This lecture attempts to bring the two together by asking a rather different question: what happens to and in rural communities after major episodes of protest? The focus is the Swing Riots of 1830 and the years that ensued up until the implementation of the New Poor Law starting in the early months of 1835. Professor Griffin's research focuses on the geographies of popular protest and capitalist transformations in eighteenth-and early nineteenth-century England including the Swing Riots.
