Halls and facilities for hire in Wye

Wye Village Hall comprises two halls, with a combined capacity of 280 people, the Reece Pavilion and a meeting room which seats ten. Both main halls have direct access to the large private gardens and play spaces. All four facilities are self-contained and have free WiFi access. Wye Village Hall has achieved ACRE 'Hallmark 2' accreditation, the national quality assurance scheme for community buildings.

Outside the Wye Village Hall, the Taynters Field recreation ground provides informal greenspace, play and sports facilities, and access to the river and the Great Stour local wildlife site. (Click on the blue bar above for more information).

Wye Parish Council bought the redundant church building in 2023 to secure its future as a community centre for public use and benefit. The Parish Council's next task is repair and renovate the building.

Wye Methodist Church dates from 1869, and it is a Grade II Listed building.

The building has been modernised internally and upgraded over the years to provide a set of comfortable, well-furnished and self-contained rooms with various facilities. Until the building closed in March 2020 all rooms were available to hire for community use. The rooms in order of descending size are:

Worship area: Our octagonal chapel, used for Sunday worship, is available for ordinary meetings during the week. There are comfortable chairs rather than pews and a movable projector screen is available on request. It seats 60 people and has a hearing loop.

Wesley Room: Our large hall has recently purchased new stacking chairs, has an electrically driven projector screen, acoustic panels to assist those with hearing difficulties and a hearing loop. Integral to this room is a modern kitchen. It has access to a small garden and can seat 30 people. Screens can be opened in the partition wall with the chapel to create a combined space.

Thomas Berry Room: This is an upstairs room suitable for smaller meetings. It has a whiteboard, electrically driven projector screen and tea and coffee making facilities. It is provided with comfortable chairs and collapsible tables and it can seat up to 15 people.

Vestry/Garden room: This room, recently refurbished, is that nearest the car park and, while available generally, is adapted particularly to the needs of less able people. It has ramped access and can seat 10 people. There is an electrically driven projector screen, tea and coffee making facilities, garden access, and an easily accessible toilet for the less able.

Small meeting room: This is suitable for small committee-type meetings and serves as a foot clinic at the beginning of each month. Tea and coffee making facilities are available there. It can seat six people.

All rooms are heated separately for economy. Access to any room to and from the building can be made without disturbing other meetings and the same is the case for toilets. Our rooms are maintained to a high standard and cleaned regularly. Conveniently, our building is centrally located in the village, and it has a small car park.

The Latin School is a listed Grade 1 building and a scheduled monument. This historic 1447 school room in Wye High Street seats up to 12 people (boardroom style) or up to 25 (theatre style), and it is available for small group meetings and exhibitions by arrangement. The Latin School is a self-contained building with its own WC, and coffee making facilities in the lobby. Visitors also have access to the adjacent walled Latin School Garden and The Green as break-out spaces.

The Latin School is accessed by two steps up from the High Street pavement. Parking is restricted in the High Street and The Green, however there is free parking nearby in Churchfield Way and Gregory Court car park.

Wye Heritage manages the Latin School as a not for profit community organisation, dedicated to the preservation of the rich heritage of the village of Wye, and the former Wye College.

Wolfson Lecture Theatre (WLT) was built with a grant from the Wolfson Foundation. and opened by HRH Princess Anne in 1989. The WLT was one of several state-of-the-art Wolfson Lecture Theatres built across the country e.g. Wolfson College Oxford King's College London and the Royal Society of Edinburgh Though the WLT in Wye was smaller it was also designed to be a high quality and self-contained venue. The Wye WLT provided up to 90 people with an excellent acoustic, audio-visual facilities, air conditioning, disabled access off the High Street and the adjacent car park.

In 2019 Ashford Borough Council gave Telereal Trillium planning permission to demolish the WLT to provide the site for a new house.

Many community groups benefited from access to the WLT, especially after 2009 when Wye College closed. Prior to 2009 the WLT was mainly in educational use, but even then the community used it frequently in the evenings and weekends. During the College vacation periods the WLT was also available during the day and it was ideal for workshops, films and exhibitions. For example, the Wye Historical Society met in the Wolfson Lecture Theatre for some 20 years, and regular Saturday Wye Book Fairs took place over a similar time period. Wye Parish Council held the 2014 Annual Parish Meeting there as neither the Village Hall nor the Methodist Hall were available.

For years Wye College, and post 2000 Imperial College, hired the WLT to a wide range of community groups as a self-contained space, alongside the Village Hall and the Methodist Hall. Imperial sold WLT to Telereal Trillium with the rest of its campus in 2015.

Regrettably, Telereal Trillium did not permit any further community use and has demolished the building.
